IBR certificate extended until 2020: Extover® fire extinguisher is safe with respect to building biology.

Extover® has already been awarded the “Tested and Recommended” seal of approval by the Institut für Baubiologie Rosenheim GmbH (IBR) in the past due to the good test results. Extover® has now been re-confirmed as safe with respect to building biology and the certificate has been extended until 2020.

The test material for the building biology safety test is obtained by the IBR by taking material samples at the place of manufacture. In the subsequent pollutant analysis, various hazardous substances are tested. The material has been tested for radioactivity, biocides, organohalogen compounds (HOV, AOX, EOX), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and phthalates, flame retardants, volatile organic compounds (VOC, SVOC) and heavy metals.

The extension of the certificate confirms our claim to the highest quality of our product. Extover® consists of pure glass and therefore is non-flammable and non-toxic. The extinguishing agent is low-reaction (inert), amorphous, fibre-free, solvent-free (VOC-free), odourless, anti-allergenic and radiologically completely harmless. The fire extinguishing granules are also alkali-resistant and acid-resistant and have a high resistance against mould. Extover® can therefore be used completely safely as an extinguishing agent and preventive fire protection agent.

About the “Tested and Recommended” seal of the IBR:

In order to maintain neutrality and objectivity, all tests were carried out by independent third parties. Economically independent laboratories are commissioned to carry out the necessary examinations and tests. All results which resulted in the certificate were taken from these external test reports.

The IBR certificate has been awarded since 1982 and offers consumers the opportunity to get informed about health-friendly materials.

ALBERO project testing Extover® fire extinguishing agent

In the coming years, the number of alternative vehicles will increase significantly. A correspondingly higher number of these cars will therefore also be transported by ferries. As a result, the risk of accidents on the high seas associated with the (most commonly) used Li-ion batteries in the vehicles transported is also growing. On ferries, however, in contrast to regular road traffic, conditions are extremely narrow. Even minor accidents can quickly lead to catastrophes if they are not counteracted quickly, appropriately and purposefully.

The ALBERO project was launched in order to be prepared in advance for possible dangers. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and combines research and science as well as the industry of RORO (Roll on/Roll off) shipping under a network of equal interests and goals.

The main objective of the ALBERO project is the safe integration of alternative vehicles into ferry traffic. Alternative powered vehicles are to be understood as electric vehicles as well as gas-powered cars, trucks or buses. The project will develop measures for the safe transport of these vehicles as well as options for charging electric vehicles. These can only be implemented in daily ship operation if they are known to all participants, if the staff is prepared accordingly and is regularly trained. The qualification of maritime personnel with regard to the transport of alternatively operated vehicles on RORO ferries is therefore of major importance, too.

Extover as fire extinguishing agent for difficult to control metal fires and lithium battery fires is generally suitable for this application. It is currently being put through its paces by the ALBERO project.

Current racing car of the BRS Motorsport e.V.

The BRS Motorsport e.V. is the Formula Student Team of the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences. The team has been developing and manufacturing electric racing cars for years and regularly participates in the international Formula Student competitions.

The Formula Student is an international constructor’s competition in which the participating teams measure themselves against each other in eight different disciplines. Every year in July and August, they compete against each other in various competitions in Europe, North America and Asia. In addition to the classic dynamic disciplines, such as acceleration, endurance and efficiency, the so-called static disciplines, e.g. the development of a business plan, play an important role in the ranking.

Extover supports the racing team of the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences with Extover® extinguishing agent in order to help the team to safely store their lithium batteries used for the racing car. This granulate is mainly used in the team’s production hall for the racing car.

The team has relied on Extover® since last year an unwanted and spontaneous thermal reaction of a battery pack almost led to an accident. Worse things could be prevented at that time. Thanks to Extover®, the team now is prepared for major incidents in the future, which are quite possible in the event of a technical defect in the batteries.

The BRS Motorsport e.V. team relies on Extover® for safe handling of high-performance batteries.

Extover® is a special extinguishing agent for lithium battery fires and metal fires that are difficult to control. It is excellently suited for preventive fire protection as a filling material for safe storage and transport of lithium batteries in hazardous goods containers.

Extover® supports Elefant Racing e.V. of the University of Bayreuth

Elefant Racing e.V. is the student racing team of the University of Bayreuth. A team of students from the Faculty of Engineering has been developing an electric racing car every year since 2004. In the internationally organized Formula Student it will then compete against more than 600 university teams worldwide to win one of the coveted trophies.

The Formula Student is an international design competition in which the participating teams compete in eight different disciplines. Each year in July and August they compete in various competitions in Europe, North America and Asia. In addition to the classic dynamic disciplines, such as acceleration, endurance and efficiency, the so-called static disciplines play a major role in the ranking in comparison with the other competitors. In addition to the preparation of a business plan and detailed cost reporting, these include above all the preparation of a meaningful design report. Ultimately, Formula Student helps to promote the development of electromobility in general.

This year’s racing car model, with which Elefant Racing e.V. is competing, was named FR 18 Siegfried with reference to the Wagner city Bayreuth. The team around 1. executive committee Vera Scheuer expects itself with the high performance electric car very good chances on one of the front places.

The futuristic racing cars are powered purely electrically. The lithium batteries, which serve as an energy source for the cars, are particularly powerful. In case of fire of the lithium batteries, e.g. due to damage or overcharging effects, a special extinguishing agent is required. This is why the team became aware of Extover® and we equipped it with our fire extinguishing granulate. Extover® is ideally suited as a fire-suppressing filling material for fireproof containers to safely charge and store lithium batteries.

Extover® is a special extinguishing agent for lithium battery and metal fires that are difficult to control. It is ideal in preventive fire protection as a filling material for the safe storage and transport of lithium batteries in hazardous goods containers. As a fire-suppressing material, Extover® contributes to the safe use of lithium batteries in test benches. Extover® meets the requirements of packing instruction P909 (ADR) for a non-combustible, non-conductive fire protection filling and may therefore be used in special containers as filling and cushioning material.

Extover® in RC model making

Advantages and applications of Extover® in RC model making

In the last issue of the renowned technical journal Modellflug International (MFI) the Extover® fire extinguishing granulate for fighting metal and lithium battery fires was described in a detailed article.

The author of the article describes in detail the advantages and applications of Extover® in RC model making. He focusses in particular on preventive fire protection. The lithium batteries used in model making require special precautions during storage and transport due to their possible inflammability. Special metal boxes filled with Extover® currently provide the best possible protection.

But Extover® also extinguishes metal and battery fires effectively and quickly. The mode of action of Extover® during the extinguishing process was also described in detail. The author was apparently able to draw on personal experiences in the vivid description.

The use of ever more powerful lithium batteries in RC model making requires safe storage of the batteries and a suitable extinguishing agent for battery fires before an emergency occurs. Extover® has been awarded the Blue Angel eco-label

Extover® fire extinguishing agent received the popular eco-label Blue Angel “Der Blaue Engel”.

The world’s oldest eco-label for environmental protection has been awarded since 1978 by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety and the Federal Environment Agency. It guarantees that this excellent products meet high demands on environmental, health and functional properties and thus makes it easier for environmentally conscious consumers to make their purchase decisions.

The most important criteria for the Blue Angel award are saving resources during production, use of sustainably produced raw materials and dispensation of substances harmful to the environment and health. Furthermore, no harmful emissions should be produced during production and the products should be easy to recycle after use.

Extover® fire extinguishing granulate consists of 100% post-consumer recycled glass, so the product has no harmful properties during manufacture, use and disposal. The Blue Angel certification confirms that Extover® helps to protect the environment.

 

Extover® fire extinguishing agent receives IBR seal

Extover® was awarded the “Tested and recommended” seal of approval by the German Institute for Building Biology Rosenheim (IBR) on the basis of the good test results. Therefore, Extover® is certified by an independent testing authority for its biological safety.

Extover® fire extinguishing granulate consists of pure glass (100 percent mineral and therefore non-combustible). The extinguishing agent made of recycled glass is low reactive, amorphous, fibre-free, solvent-free (VOC-free), odourless, anti-allergenic and radiologically completely harmless and non-toxic. The material is also resistant to acids and alkalis and has a high pH value, making it highly resistant to mould.

The IBR seal of approval has been awarded since 1982 in order to give consumers the opportunity to protect themselves in their home environment against health hazards caused by building materials.

Extover® is completely harmless and can be used in industrial and residential construction, for example as a preventive fire protection agent. As protective layer against fire and gases, the fire extinguishing granulate can be used as durable and long lasting filling of suspended ceilings.

Existing buildings can be retrospectively and reversibly filled with Extover®. Cable retrofitment is still possible for cable ducts, for example. As a positive side effect, the user receives excellent insulation properties.

 

Extover® introduces Voltmaster, its new distribution partner in the modelling sector

Voltmaster, located in Memmingen, is one of the leading German modelling specialists. The Extover® fire extinguishing agent is already available in Voltmaster’s online shop.

In the RC modelling branch, the fire of batteries is one of the biggest hazards. Extover® provides the perfect solution in order to effectively extinguish lithium-polymer and lithium-ion batteries that have caught fire. These can be extinquished quickly, safely and cleanly.

Extover® is applied to the fire, surrounds it and suffocates it. At particularly high temperatures, the expanded glass melts and spreads over the surface of the burning metal. The melt creates an airtight layer that crusts over as it cools and causes the metal fire to extinguish. Re-ignition is effectively prevented.
